Bladestar Renewables Ltd were tasked with completing Category 2 Leading Edge Erosion repairs on x3 vestas blades. The blades were in general good health however had fallen victim to leading edge erosion with no protection applied at factory. Each blade had approximately 3 metres of leading edge erosion. The inspection photo’s were blurry therefore we were unsure as to the extent of the damage ie; paint, filler or laminate damage.

Key Points

Investigation

Each blade had approximately 3 metres of leading edge erosion.  The inspection photo’s were blurry therefore we were unsure as to the extent of the damage ie; paint, filler or laminate damage.

We estimated that the works would take around 20 hours to complete.  We organised and liaised with Gael Energy to supply us with an AT for the works.

Repair

On the lead up to the works we were delayed due to weather and rescheduled as to not incur further costs to our customer.

Upon starting the works via rope access, we were pleased to see that the damage was minimal. Mostly paint and filler erosion with some CSM laminate damage but well below our structural damage laminate guidelines.

Damaged filler and paint were removed and replaced with a stronger brand of filler and repainted with a 2K paint.   Small additional damages were found during the scheduled repairs.  We consulted with the customer and we were able to complete these on the same visit.

All repairs were completed on time and within budget resulting in another very satisfied customer!
