Internal Blade Inspections

Project Information

Bladestar Renewables Ltd were tasked with completing internal blade inspections across the Sevion portfolio for EDF Renewables. Internal inspections are a crucial part of ensuring the integrity of blades. Internal defects are often more severe and can jeopardise the asset if not monitored correctly.

Key Points

• Hands on thorough internal blade inspection completed using 3-man team.
• Bladestar inhouse Senvion Limited AT.
• Customer kept in constant communication of any findings during inspection.
• Detailed inspection report sent out to customer within 72 hours of completion.

Investigation

The internal inspection was conducted utilising our own inhouse Senvion L-AT’s. This allowed us to work self-sufficiently requiring no external support from the client which freed up their own resources. During the routine internal inspection all 3 chambers of the blade were inspected for any anomalies. During this specific inspection, x2 chord ways cracks were discovered on the pressure side of the blade. This is a common defect on this blade type and Bladestar have completed hundreds of these repairs with 100% success rate. As all our vans are equipped with all materials for repairs, we were able to deliver a quick turnaround on quoting for the repair. This was accepted and the repair was started immediately. Discovering these types of defects early and being able to action an immediate solution helped in mitigating any further risk to the blade. Separate case study for the repair that was completed is available upon request.

What the client had to say...

EDF has a wide and varied fleet of wind turbines which generates One Gigawatt of renewable energy. This sizeable fleet requires constant maintenance from specialist personnel and contractors in order to maintain the highest possible efficiency, one of those contractors is Bladestar Blade Repair. EDF chose to work with Bladestar due to their expertise in blade internal and external inspections, structural repairs and Root Cause Assessment of faults. Throughout the time EDF have worked with Bladestar they have found them to be highly skilled, approachable and professional. Their work ethic is second-to-none and they are willing to go above and beyond in order to achieve our goal. Both Chris and Joe are stand out in their abilities and they have contributed to EDF’s values and mission towards net zero. I can highly recommend Bladestar for any blade repair work or inspections and EDF will be collaborating with them going forward.
